Choosing the Right Stylist

Perhaps your stylist retired, your schedules no longer match, or maybe you just need a fresh start, whatever the reason we’ve all been there and understand that finding a new hairdresser can be a daunting task. You can relax though, our team has come up with a checklist to guide you through this!

  1. Ask your friends, neighbors, etc

We’d suggest finding someone who’s hair is a similar texture and natural color to yours and who’s salon color or cut always looks great. Seeing their work up close and personal is a great way to boost your confidence in their skills and quell any misgivings you have about booking with someone new. If your friend’s stylist isn’t accepting new clients the next tip is for you!

  2. Head over to Instagram

Instagram is a gold mine of hair inspiration photos, stylists, and salons so it can be hard to sift through everything! You can find local hairstylists who specialize in what you’re looking for by searching local hashtags or simply search ‘Hamburg balayage’ or ‘716 curly hair specialist’ for example, and sort through the results. When you look at their stylist Instagram page be sure to scroll far enough down to see if they do the type of work you’re looking for! For instance, if you’re looking for an icy blonde and this stylist mostly posts rich, warm brunettes you may want to keep looking.

  3. Book a consultation

What is a consultation? Usually its an appointment that takes 10-20 minutes where you’ll discuss your hair history, product usage, how much maintenance you’re willing to keep up with, and your overall lifestyle to see what cuts or colors will suit you.

Keep in mind some stylists charge for a consultation and some don’t. There’s no right or wrong here with consultation fees but most stylists who do charge are selective in the types of work they take on so they can focus on their specialty. No worries if you aren’t a good fit, the stylist may even refer you to someone else in the salon or in your area who is better suited to your needs!

  4. Book a simple service

Maybe don’t book a haircut just yet, but a deep conditioning treatment or a blowout would be a good way to check out the salon and see if its a good fit! This will also let you meet your stylist one on one so you can see if you communicate well with each other and are on the same page. At this appointment, if the vibes are good, pick their brain about what color or cut they’d choose for you next time! If you like what their ideas are and you’re comfortable see if you can book that next service with them.

We hope this checklist helps you out and that you find your new stylist friend soon!
